Sometimes makes me wonder whether I am gaining more wisdom or turning senile throughout these years lolx!First of all, a checklist:
1. Handing in the Borang Sekretariat and Borang Perancangan Projek Tahunan for Kelab BATI: Check.
2. Had first meeting and start of with some planning on our first project, BATI Interaction Night: Check.
3. Drop by 1st years juniors class to do announcement about it: *despite the innecessant fear towards Dr. A.* Check.
4. Went to meet up with lecturers/club advisors to talk about projects planning: Check. *AHH, ideas overflow~~~ yet another prove that our lecturers are better than us. Youth FAIL.*
What to do list:
1. Pestering my AJK to do their job quickly. Oi, kertas kerja ler?!
2. Announce it in the 3rd years class. (LMAO sendiri dalam kelas tak buat announcement)
3. Collect fees from all 3 years of BATI student. (ahh money matter is very touchy touchy)
4. Drop by HEPP again to check the remark for the projects + more briefing about project management (in the form of two days intensive course?! Free food though.)
5. Prepare the official letter for my AJK that wants to apply car sticker.
6....and more when things turn out from time to time.
Two weeks had passed and only now I finished a couple of my obligations as the club president. But no worries, with the submission of the Borang Sekretariat and Perancangan Projek Tahunan, the transition from the previous term to the current term is officially complete and now we will be on our wat to carry the torch. Can't wait to see all the juniors (2nd years and most importantly, 2nd years). Though, somewhat I feel that the first years haven't really warm up to us yet. Obviously two visits after class with other class rushing in is not exactly enough. Or is it because of age gap? Need to makesure that all of us will know each other by the end of the interaction day. *Fingers crossed!!*
And USM library the media section got the DVD of it! Borrowed it~~~

Club activities aside, these two weeks of class had been quite interesting as well despite being quite tedious. To make this simple, lets run through what I had been/will be going through for the past two week according to each subjects.
The HBT's:
HBT 304 Consecutive Interpretation: This semester we will be under the tutelage of Dr. Noraini Ibrahim-Gonzalez (Yes, she is married to a Spaniard. Muy interesante, no?) because Dr. Leelany will be going off soon for her sabbatical for this semester. Nevertheless, Dr. Leelany will be taking the first 3 weeks of class, tutorial and recording and tomorrow (Thursday) will be my first HBT304 tutorials and recording. This week's class touches on professional etiquette and grooming and she mentioned that she will go in depth during our tutorial. I wonders who will be used as the speciment for grooming example in our class (hopefully not me). Ahh, need to iron my shirts and slacks as well cos it has been crumpled up like dead leaf. And I wonder what are we gonna do for our first test-recording.
*additional material (16/9): We start off out tutorial with a quick check of our attire. All pass!! Next we had a little exposure/training for our consecutive interpretation by listening and interpret...this song.Line by line.
Verdict: It is hard and it really strains your short term memory (in which I am extremely lacking of) to the breaking point. It is already quite hard in jotting down words and phrases which you can later connect it back to form coherent meaning, let interpreting it into BM right after it! This is further explained in our first recording (which was suppose to be on Thursday evening as well but got cancelled and then replaced on Friday aka my free day in the week. *sigh*) which we had more training by listening and interpret Tony Blair's election campaign speech regarding fighting crime ("We know that the crime rate has risen 50% during the last Conservative government" and Creimwatch. lol) and documentary about Prince William volunteering in some remote village named Tortel in Chile at the Southern most region of South America. ("This is the worst porridge that I had ever had!", Prince William commenting about the porridge that he cooked himself.) To finish off, we were given a task to roleplay as a simulation about conscecutive interpreting in real life and we need to do it in our next tutorial. My group consist of Bazli and Siik Ling and I got to roleplay a war correspondent interviewing ordinary citizen (Siik Ling) and soldier (Bazli) in the war while Dr Leelany will choose an interpreter from the rest of the people. I wonder how's the tutorial gonna turnout for all of us...but I bet it's gonna be kinda funny!
HBT 213- Semantics and Syntax for Translation - Haven't go in depth yet because we only had our first class and the class is tomorrow. But ohh before I divulge more detail about what we had in our previous class, the location of the class is way beyond dreary: for some reason that all of us, students and lecturers cannot fathom is that we were placed at the Dewan Peperiksaan right under PHS 2. That place had turned into makeshift lecture hall, complete with softboards to form a makeshift wall inside the huge Dewan Peperiksaan. With the pillars and dim lighting, its basically like a goddamn crypt. The impression that all of us will be caved in alive in this crpyt (due to stress and/or building collapsing) had dawned upon all of us. Oh well, let's see how our lecture will turn out tomorrow and how long our wit can last in that goddamn crypt. As for the subject itself, I have the feeling that it can be pretty dry but we will see since Dr. Goh will add in additional stuff about Mandarin during our tutorial since he is the only lecturer in this course.
Additional Stuff :- He started off with introduction to...language. And the talking about exploitation and being exploited in our mind using language goes on~~~ Dr Goh seems to have the belief that translators are capable to change people's mind by producing translation and shakes the world. (Menggegarkan dunia) Oleh itu rakan-rakan penterjemah sekalian, sudahkah kita bersedia untuk menggegarkan dunia dengan hasil terjemahan kami? Oh of course besides that, we were notified of the week that we need to submit our presentation report as well as the time for our presentation. For our batch however, Dr. Goh wants us to compile all of our presentation report into an academic manuscript and keep it in our Pusat Sumber for future references as well as possibilities of being published as an academic book. Sounds cool but by doing this of course, we sets the bar higher for ourselves to produce the high quality and academic worthy output. I wonder how all of us gonna fare for this semester. Ohh last but not least, my groups topic is about Analisis Makna penterjemahan kata ganti nama diri dalam teks berita. (or something like that).
HBT 302- Sociolinguistics and Translation
This has to be the most interesting course for the past two weeks. Sociolinguistics which is coined combining to socio- (or social) with linguistics looks into details social context and interaction influences language usage and development, directly or indirectly. Sociolinguistics is basically everything the revolves around our daily life like how we speak and how we interact within our own social contexts being coined with an sophisticated academic term.
For once, a textbook! This book covers a fairly wide range of topics and what makes this book interesting is it uses a lot of examples in real life with real people to bring out the points. The part that intrigues me the most/highly anticipated is the chapter regarding the formation of creole and pidgin as well as national language planning. I wonder how can we apply any of this into Malaysia context to solves our language clouts.
This course is under the tutelage of Dr. Aniswal and true to her teaching style/nature, she asked us to watch My Fair Lady and Gosford Park because it will come our in our mid-semester test. Aie~~~ These two movies are quite good in showcasing the differences and varieties of accents across different social classes. Besides that, we need to do a small fieldwork regarding sociolinguistic (and it can be of any topic actually) during the convocation week because that will be the time where the population of USM swelled multiple times due to family members of the graduate. (as describe by Dr. A: "seorang saja convo, 5 kereta penuh!")

LHP453 Creative Writing: Confusing. Very Confusing. Classes shuffling, poem writing and brain-storming. And what did I produce from these two weeks: a rather ambigious and short poem about my current uni life made of 12 words only and a rather depressing short paragraph of whatever it is because I brainstormed about Orwellian 1984. By this rate, I am not exactly sure how am I gonna fare in this...and it's my core paper!
LHP455 English Pronunciation: Anatomy of speech articulators/vocal tracts and we need to memorize it. Larynx, Bilabial, Palate yada yada. Now we had our pre-activity assignment: describing the movement/action of our speech articulators when we pronounce certain words...and we need to do it in pair. I unfortunately was paired with an Iraqi foreign student who tend to speak loudly. Ma'am Florence, you are not making it easy for me!

This semester is not going to be easy despite its only 15 units and I got myself a free Friday to spare. Club affairs, course affairs, personal affair sums up to a very exciting yet kinda worrying semester ahead. Wish me luck!!!! And to all my fellow coursemates and juniors: we shall go through it together!
Epilogue: *Phew! This was one heck long of a blogpost and it actually took me 4 days just to finish it! (also because of the spotty USMhotspot in my rooms makes me hard to do any progress in this blogpost as well.) Sushi buffet, karaoke & buffet, and other numerous escapades with frens in USM!!! All in the coming post. Meanwhile, the urge to get my hand on a new digital camera is getting higher with the JPA money and research with Dr. Goh salary coming in. But wait, still got more stuff to be done/to correct again for the research! Oh dear will this ever end!?
