In 2001 during the era where a lot of pop groups mushroomed out of nowhere all around the globe before it fizzle off, a Swedish pop group name Caramell released an album which contain a song named Caramelldansen (Caramell's Dance). It was just a typical group pop song of the era.
Then, some really bored people in 4chan (the all notorious internet imageboard) heard the song while playing Popotan and were immediately amused by the opening of it. So he got an idea: he sped up the pace of Caramelldansen, merge it with the gif cut out from Popotan and upload it over to Niconicodouga/Youtube. And from that point onward, an explosion occured.
This is the original Popotan meme...
Which then spread to everything else thanks to otaku-tachi @ Niconicodouga!
It became a staple of anime con...
In fact, it became so widespread that Caramell released the remix version of Caramelldansen, complete with the signature dancing video!

Epilogue: Here, done. Exam coming in 5 days and I haven't studied anything, not even bothered to print out the powerpoint slide and such. I am such a slacker and procrastinator. ZOMG PROCRATINATOR v7500 has held me hostage!
