Usually i always eat nasi campur here cos there are many choices of vegies and meat that can go along with your rice. And you know, usually the portion of single order meal usually is.....quite small for big appetite for me so nasi campur gives me the freedom of portion!!! But still, price is still a matter of concern and it is important to balance up ur expenditure on food.
Since i am here for only about 2 weeks, i can only gives partial coverage of canteen(4 hostels canteen) and canteen food of USM. I learned from the seniors as well to get the best deal of food out of it. Even though most of them do serve curry, there are non-spicy dishes to choose from as well so don't worry about your diet.(if you still can't handle canteen food, then go out lor to Sg. Dua gate!! kopitiams and hawkers stall everywhere!!!)
First and foremost, i would really, REALLY like to recommend Nasi campur of Desasiswa Indah Kembara. They have the cheapest nasi campur in the whole campus. Its price is unbelievably cheap!!!! Once i get one whole heap of rice, cabbage and fish ball cook in tomato sauce(one whole heap of it) and the price tag ends up RM1.60!!! (this is my very first meal at IK and my eyes really lights up!!!) One reason for this relatively cheap price is because it is subsidized by PALAPES.(student volunteer army cadets, i learned the fact today from my coursemate). One caveat though, they only serves lunch and as for dinner, it highly depend on the amount of foods left. They close right after most of the food is finished. It happen to me once where i go to the canteen hopefully to find cheap food only to discover that......its closed.......dang.
Second recommendation is Cahaya Gemilang Canteen, choice are very reasonable as well(second behind IK). Variable amount of choice as well and they usually serve fried rice as well in the evening. Enjoyed their meal throughout my one week stay at CG. Once i take quite a big plate of fried rice and a piece of sunnyside egg and the price tag ends up as RM 2.50. Reasonable i think.
For those who strictly want chinese food cooked by chinese, there are chinese canteen operator in Bakti Permai Canteen. Variable choice as well, and the auntie also serves chicken rice during the fasting month of muslims.(she recieved complain*WTF* from malay when she serve chicken rice back then, so she only serves when they are not around aka fasting month). The price is also....ok lar but closer to market price. I think there are other chinese operator as well in the campus but i am not so sure where izzit though.
NON-RECOMMENDATION
Never eat at nasi campur at RST(Restu Saujana Tekun) Hostel complex(my present residence). Their price is a total ripoff!!!! For the same(or less) portion that i get in IK, i am charged for RM4.20!!! IYAA!!!!! I tried it once and(reluctantly for a 2nd one today cos the fact that IK is closed and my hostel is far from any place, i also don't want to eat at Khaleel Nasi Kandar outside also because of ripoff price) i swear i don't want to eat there again unless under severe hunger!!!!!
As for drinks, all canteen pretty much serves the same drinks for the same price, all vey reasonable. But of course u can't survive only with H20 right?
Maybe i will embark in another campus food hunt if i got time, scouring all the canteen available in USM campus.( i also found out one obsure one hiding behind the Dewan Budaya, heard they serves good roti canai ^_^)
