I am sure all Highian's and ex-highian heard about this already in the news these couple of days...in fact, it's in the front page of local news...
A fire broke out in Kuching High around noon 2nd of Nov (Tuesday), razing down all of Junior Science Lab building and reducing it into ashes before spreading over to the adjacent School Administration Building, destroying most of the wooden second floor.
The fire in full blaze. (footage from Youtube)
I only got this news late at night when a MSN chat window pop in as soon as I sign in...and it's all the way from Russia by Dominic. (lolx) Anyway, I was indeed shocked by the extent of damage of the fire when he sent the photo of it over. Luckily my mom (a proud Ex-Highian, btw) didn't wake up late at night and bump in to me though, she would have loss her sleep. And she was shocked as well the next morning, when the story shows up in the front page of local news.
Later on the next day, I decided to do a little visit back to Kuching High (while having a lil tour in Kuching city after finishing the application for my passport earlier in the morning) to check out the extent of damage.

I will sorely missed the junior science lab block and as well as the library which located on the 2nd floor of the admin building...the junior science lab has a vast collection of preserved specimens of animal and literally jar over jar of preserved creepy crawlies such as centipedes and snakes and some other random animal lined in the old glass cabinet. The most amusing specimen however is a jar of premature foetus. YES, WE HAVE DEAD BABIES. IN JAR.
Another fond memories that I have over junior science lab is during our first exposure to alkaline metal, namely lithium (Li), sodium (Na) and potassium (K). The experiment if I am not mistaken is about the activeness of each metal's reaction with water, one of the characteristic of alkaline metal. Our science teacher (What's her name again?) showed us the activeness of lithium reacting with water by scraping a tiny fragment of it and put it on the surface of water...and the metal travelled around the water surface randomly and vigorously. Next one is the spontaneity and explosiveness (exothermic, right?) of its reaction by putting a small fragment of it on top of a petri paper floating on a surface of water...and the petri paper burned before being extinguished by the water. Of course, this is one amazing discovery of science for us so we convinced our teacher to put in BIGGER fragment of lithium. And she did. It was hilarious because all of us rushed to other end of the lab and all of us were joking about whether we will blew the lab or not. After applying bigger fragment of lithium, our science teacher rush back as well, waiting for the magic moment to happen...the whole petri paper on water COMBUST, resulting in firework-like effect and flinging burning fragments of paper on the first row of lab table. Even though we need to clean up the scarred bits of the lab table in the end, we had fun. LOL.
As for the library which was located on the 2nd floor of the admin building, I remember I always hang out at the library, reading the outdated Guinness World Record on the shelves as well as lugging out the huge National Geographic Atlas from the shelves, oggling at all the maps and looking for new places etc. It was indeed a sanctuary for me back then. I wonder how many books that were saved from the fire...
Anyway, what's the most interesting thing that came out from the incident is that how fast every ex-Highian that I knew, here or abroad receive the news. Just look at his, hers, hers, hers and of course on facebook, this and this. Guess we all love Kuching High after all. lolx
So all highians! We all know what should do right now, right? Let us rebuild what we had loss with every effort that we have big or small. Kuching High boleh!
