Woke up earlier again because today's the climax of all exam: the ever dreadful HBT105: Kaedah Penterjemahan/Translation Methods. Typical morning habit aka switch on laptop, brush teeth, online yada yada. Well, except I took bath as well as refilling my kettle for boiling water. Back from the chilling morning bath (had to switch off the fan for a while). Boiled water for my Campbells' mushroom soup and Munchy's Chocolate Crackers as my breakfast. (ADDICTIVE!) Visited Aarinfantasy as usual in typical online routine. (but of course not without my brand new earphone as well as privacy that came along with it!!! but WTH the brand's name sounds so ciplak: Somic!) Slightly disappointed that there no manga title that managed to caught my eye today. Then decided to search for Taishi Zaou's manga/doujin since it has been quite a while since I downloaded his (or izzit her?) manga/doujin (ohh the one with Tentacles x Athrun of Gundam Seed fandom...sinfully porny!!). Then one title manages to caught my attention: A KERORO GUNSOU YAOI DOUJIN!!!! Spending the rest of the online time downloading the series of Keroro Gunsou doujin. (downloaded two and failing one...tsk!) The storyline is bordering absurdities: anthromorphized Keroro Platoon amazed by (male!) human anatomy. More bodily exploration ensues!!!! Literally squealed and amazed by my finding. Aiks! Its almost 8 in the morning. Washed my mug. Pack up notes into bag. Ran through last check before departing. Went down straight to the destination: Dewan Utama Destination RST...which is right behind my Tekun anyway.
Reached there within 2 minutes. Apparently the examiners is still preparing the hall for the exam. Went along the hall to find the whereabout of the notice listing down seating plan/number for the exam. Went to the other end of DUD. Mr. Koay is the first there again...but wait! The second year senior that took this paper is there as well. This makes me the third then! Find that the notice board is still empty (Hmph). Decided to sit at the hallway to try to catch up a bit in study...to no avail (Dang). Saw Dr. Rokiah came carrying all the exam sheets and such. Looks like she is one of the examiners for this hall as well. The seating list was putted on the notice board. Checked out my seat number. And luckily I wasn't blocked from having exam! (you know...the RUN-IN?) Realized that we are sharing the hall with 5 others papers as well. Soon a small crowd was formed outside the hall as more and more student came. Most of us expressed their own WORRIES for this exam...including me...I can sense the sudden chill down my spine as the exam time creep closer and closer. As soon as the door opened, everyone of us rushed into the exam hall on respective seats. But only after the examiners reminded us to keep our stuff in the hall instead outside of hall in fear of theft. My seat is the centre row in the middle of the hall, centre front position. Briefing done by Dr. Rokiah. 9:00 am. Exams...STARTS NOW!!! (lets move on to analysis then...)
HBT105: Kaedah Penterjemahan/Translation Method
Consist of two major parts and each parts consist of two essay questions. First part (or Part A) contribute 80 marks of the paper and two essay question must be done compulsory. Second part (or Part B) contribute 20 marks and consisted of two choices that we can only choose one.
Analysis: The arrangement and numbers of question was very clearcut. But as soon I flipped open the exam sheets, the chills the went down my spine immediate turn chillier like 10 degrees or something. To gives a clearer view on whats happening on each question, lets breakdown the analysis into individual questions:
Part A:
Question One: Adverb/Adverbial phrase. 5 sentences are given as the source text.
Question (a):identify adverb/adverbial phrase in the text. (10 marks) Not as easy as I actually thought since I can identify most of the direct one but the obvious one is not even 10 when added up. I identify none in in 1st sentence. (..."Your life is one long rush. You're no sooner in the house than you're out again." Can anyone see it?) When I look through it a few more times, the end product still doesn't added up as 10. Oh well. Expecting 3 marks gone from this part.
Question (b): Discuss the suitable translation method that which can applied when translating these adverb/adverbial phrases that you had been identified. (10 marks) I AM SERIOUSLY STUMPED as I didn't pay enough attention on this part. Immediate stucked within the first glance, I moved on to other easier parts questions and subsequently went back here again as well as one other question in the final 20 minutes. The method I mentioned: direct translation, adaptation and replacement with some other words (is that even a method?!) with ill-construct example to back up each methods. Expecting more mark lost from this part.
Question (c): Translation the first three sentence with the method mentioned in the previous question. (20 marks) Not much of a biggie and in fact easier than the previous question. Did it before going back to the previous question. Had a little problem in translating the first sentence (AGAIN). Translated it as "Kehidupan anda kelihatan sentiasa terpusu-pusu. Pulang ke rumah sekejap sahaja sudah keluar lagi" Sounds kinda odd right? But hopefully these part can help me in scraping marks to cover up the loses made in the previous two questions.
Question 2: Culture and translation. Source text: Blyton, Enid, 1975 [1962] Look Out Secret Seven, London, Knight, pg26. Total 3 short paragraphs.
Question (a): Translate paragraph 2 into these types of translation: Gloss, Literal Translation and Natural Translation. (15 marks) Kinda hopeful in scraping marks from here but find myself encountering a little problem in translating the expression "(My) Goodness!" and "the time simple flies by!". It still sounds odd even in my supposed natural translation. Do you think "alamak" is a proper substitute for "My goodness" in terms of expressing surprise?
Question (B): Discuss the method used in producing the literal and natural translation of the previous questions. (10 marks) Again, STUMPED. And again, using the overly used direct translation, adaption and more crapping with ill-conceived examples ensues. This is the other question that I left until the last 20 minutes in order to scrape marks from easier question. Expecting mark loss!!!
Question (C): Discuss the cultural aspect that need to pay attention of in the process of translating the source text proper for Malaysian audience. And this is when crapping ensues with references from the source text. I found myself discussing "(my) goodness" as in substitution of "My god" and how odd it sound if we used "Oh tuhanku" in normal conversations and hence its much better to translate it into alamak instead. Then, I even explained about the usage of doorbell(the text: "Goodness-that's Mother ringing our bell,") that most Malaysian home is not equipped with a doorbell hence a reader might not understand why they need to ring a bell to find someone if knocking or yelling outside the house can do the same thing(too bad I didn't include this argument in!) in making the owner come out. Hence, translating it as finding the person is well enough in bringing the message. The result sounds more like absurd then viable argument. I wonder how much marks that I can get from this.
Finally first part of question finished. Next part: Part B.
Question 3: Proper nouns as well as cultural translation. Source text: Gaarder, J, 1996 [1991] Sophie's World, New York: Berkley Books, pg 343. Translated by Paulette Moller. (My choice)
Question (a): Translate paragraph one and two into Malay. Since this is a children's story, attempt taken in translating it in order to make it more natural in Malay...to a certain extent only...And I do realized that we can't translate Garden of Eden directly. (Taman Eden?) What about Little Red Ridinghood (Si gadis bertopi merah?) and Winnie-the-Pooh?(si beruang Winnie-the-pooh). A little stumped by this as well...
Questions (B): Refering to teks 2 and take into account Malaysian context, discuss the truth of the following statement.
Proper names in fairy stories, folk tales and children's literature are often translated, on the ground that children and fairies are the same the world over. (Newmark, 1988 pg 71)
...And usually this kind of question is opened for discussion so rambling in full throttle!!!! Again touched about Garden of Eden and its origin in the bible, citing that most of Malaysian will fail in relating the concept of natural beauty that the expression that it want to present since most Malaysian are not Christian. Hence it is better to translate it into taman impian (garden of dream) since the reader can relate it in their own way and imagination. And I was tempted to include Little Red Ridinghood and Winnie-the-pooh into my discussion as well but unfortunately limited by time constraint and the urge to finish all the questions that left out. But this question is indeed first question that I manage to finish fully.
The question not chosen, Question 4: Sports text, Tennis featuring Roger Federer with his winning picture gracing the source text. Sourse: BBC news online.
Question a) By considering the audience of a Malay Newspaper, discuss the method suitable in translating the underlined expressions/word in source text.
Question b) Identify two terminology of the involved sports (Tennis lah, DUH.) and discuss its translation in BM in the context of formation of new terminology in Malay.
Reason not to choose: Its translation method AGAIN!!!!! (I know its an IRONY that I am having hard time in answering Translation Method in TRANSLATION METHOD paper.) Plus, it narrows down the discussion to individual expression and words which makes any attempt to crap almost Herculean. Playing safe, playing safe...
-Analysis end...back to main topic!-
10 minutes into exam. Discovered there is one empty seats in the row besides me. Wondered who is the person. 30 minutes into exam. Saw Minny rushing into the exam hall and seated at that particular seat. Late, it seems. 1 hours into exam. Some people seating for other people left the hall while all of the BATI stayed until the end of exam. Time flies...and its almost the end of exam. The hall was...FREEZING. Blowing air into palm as well as vigourous rubbing on thigh does not help much in this freezing situation with the air-con vent right on top of us. XiangYi who sat behind me during all the exam expressed the same freezing expression. Exam finally ended and examiners starts to collect all the exam sheets. Dr Rokiah as the chief examiner this time, sternly reminded us that we should be silent while the examiners are tallying up the exam sheets. As soon as they finished, they release us and all of us sped out of the hall in search of the well-needed warmth. Catch up with TzeSieng and SanJing about exchanging anime and such. Promised to bring along my external harddisk during Wednesday's Japanese exam. Look forward for more anime for holidays!!!
Joined XinMi, SzeSze, YenPheng, ChiaMin and SheiHan at the front porch. Wondered about where can we go for lunch. Tekun Cafe shall be! Me acting as a tourguide for the CG-ian and gloated about HOW GREAT TEKUN IS. (I know its stupid but LOL) Reached Tekun cafe. Slightly surprised Hooi Cafe is not completely opened yet. Waited for a while while XinMi and YenPheng went off to the convenient store to buy some bread. Soon, Hooi cafe is opened so all of us line up for the NOM. Decided to eat a chicken today for lunch. So everyone starts musing about each other meal as well. More chit-chatting ensues, ranging from respective hostel (SzeSze was bemused that the storage at Tekun opened so late...I am bemused as well...and when the hell we can know our placement in hostel anyway!!!!), our roommate (ok, even though Benjamin is ok, but I do wish I can stay with a junior...if there is ever one), PCFair (bemused that the price didn't drop much this time), and even bags. (I wan a single sling bag for outing use!!!!) Soon, we bid each other farewell and went back to respective hostel.
Back to room. Online. Proceed to Aarinfantasy to download the last Keroro Gunsou doujin. Failed. (ARRRGGGHHH!!!) Turn off laptop and went for a nap. Woke up at 5 plus pm. Went to bathe while turn on lappie to go online. Back to Aarinfantasy again to download it. This time...SUCCEED!!!!! Satisfied, went down to for dinner. Dismayed by the lack of choices in dishes at Hooi Cafe. *sigh* Went over to De Cafe Ria and ordered nasi goreng daging merah. While waiting for my order to be done, went over to the convenient shop and finding myself buying Munchy's Chocolate Cracker again!!! (ADDICTIVE.) Moved back to De Cafe Ria to feast on my dinner. Saw a couple of familiar faces around Tekun cafe. Went back to room and continue to go online. Added one new widget in my blog. And blogging...until now. Tirawud, the 3rd year senior came over to room and watch Hana Yori Dango at Ben's lappie, with me minding my own business by continuing blogging...and the sudden thunder and lightning shocked me. Looks like its gonna rain soon!!!!
-fin, and yours truly, ZheRong will signing off now!!!-
